hippo poolThe famous pictures of elephants foraging with Mt. Kilimanjaro in the backdrop are most likely taken from the Amboseli National Park. In this seemingly dry terrain, you will find permanent swamps near Ol Tukai and the Enkonngo Narok swamp which is a striking vision with it's border of beautiful yellow-barked fever trees. The northern plains around Ol Tukai become seasonal marshes which are the primary feeding grounds for thousands of zebra, gazelle and wildebeast. Hippos and buffalo wallow in the mud while elephants chomp on greenery not far away. This is also one of the only places you may find the 'big tuskers', as there is virtually no poaching in this park. In the open grassy areas you can find fringe-eared oryx' and buffalo. The combination of swamp and dry grassy lands makes this an ideal habitat for a variety of birds. There is no doubt why this is one of the most popular parks in Africa!
