This uninhabited land in the southern part of Tanzania surpasses the size of Switzerland and is the largest reserve in Africa. The largest concentration of wildlife is found here, only second to that of the Serengeti, though more widely dispersed. The sand streams of the Rufiji River divide the rolling savannah woodlands from the grassland plains and the rocky outcrops. Elephant, buffalo, hippo, wild dog, crocodile, giraffe, zebra, wildebeast, hartebeest and ostrich are numerous. One of the park's most striking landscapes is Stiegler's Gorge, with it's 100 meter deep and 100 meter wide canyons. The eastern boundary of the reserve on the bank of Rufiji River, is a great place for fishing trips and river safaris. Boat rides on the Rufiji offer a unique safari experience and close up views of hippos and crocodiles. You will find a variety of animals and magnificent waterbirds at the Tagalala, Manze, Nzerakera, Mzizima and Siwando lakes. You can also visit the Maji Moto hot springs, an area with lush palm trees.
