Zanzibar MuseumZanzibar lies 25 miles off the shore, north of Dar es Saalam. The "Land of Spice" is also the land of sandy white beaches, ancient Arab ruins and tropical refuge. During the harvest season between July and December, you can actually smell the scent of cloves in the air. With the passage of time little has changed in the Old Town of Zanzibar, the capital of the island. The red colobus monkey can be found in the Jozani Forest, the only sanctuary left in the world for this endangered animal. The northern ruins include a palace built by an early nineteenth century Arab, as well as the Maruhubi Palace ruins built between 1870 and 1888. You can also venture through coconut plantations to the Persian Baths of Kidichi, situated on the highest spot on the island. If you truly wish to 'get away', the eastern shore is the place for you. Here you will find picturesque fishing villages, coral homes where the local villagers reside and women creating intricately embroidered Muslin caps. The Indian Ocean's warm sunlit waters provide for fabulous diving and snorkeling amongst a conglomeration of coral and marine life.
